Navigating school and neurodivergence as a parent in Sweden

Since moving to Sweden, I’ve noticed a steady stream of posts – often anonymous – on various Facebook groups for expats and English speakers. Many of them come from parents trying to figure out how best to support a child with an autism or ADHD diagnosis, how to collaborate with schools, how to navigate daily life in a new country with extra layers of complexity, or how to manage the dynamics of a neurodiverse family where everyone’s needs don’t always align.

A little over a year ago, after seeing just how many people were facing these questions alone, I decided to create an online Facebook group specifically for families like ours – the snappily titled:

My hope was to build a space where people could ask questions without judgement, share experiences, and get practical ideas from others who’ve walked a similar path.

A couple of weeks ago, we held our first structured online meeting. The focus was on understanding the Swedish school system – what the legal responsibilities of schools actually are, what families can reasonably expect, the rights of children here, and a few insights from an educator’s perspective.

In the spirit of openness, and because I know there are many others out there who might be looking for the same information but aren’t in the Facebook group, I’ve put together a write-up of the session. I hope it helps make things a little clearer – and a little easier – for anyone navigating this journey.

You are welcome to download the pdf write up here:

I have also put together a document in response to some of my previous clients’ needs about possible modifications your ND child might need in school. This list is not exhaustive, but might be a good starting point to think about how to get your child’s needs met. Again, you are welcome to download this document:

If any of this resonates, you’re welcome to join our FB group, or alternatively please do get in touch with me via the contacts page if you need therapeutic or coaching support around neurodivergence.
